What questions do you have?

What is dragon boating?

The ancient sport of dragon boating began in China over 2,000 years ago. The traditional 40 foot long boat has 20 paddlers seated side-by-side on 10 rows. There is also a steers person at the stern and a drummer perched on the bow keeping rhythmic time.

What is the relationship between breast cancer and dragon boating?

In 1996, a sports medicine physician, Dr. Don McKenzie from the University of British Columbia, discovered the benefits of paddling for overall health following cancer treatments. He challenged the validity of accepted wisdom that discouraged breast cancer patients from participating in strenuous upper body exercises. He conducted studies and found that upper body exercise had a role in recovery because it improved range of motion, reduced muscle atrophy, activated the immune system, and reduced symptoms of lymphedema.

Who can join you in the boat?

Any breast cancer survivor can join us! Our members encompass all ages spanning several decades, some in active treatment, and some who are 20+ year survivors. DUC Pink is inclusive of all and is comprised of women from diverse backgrounds.

Do I need prior experience?

No experience necessary. In fact, you don’t even need athletic ability. We will teach you what you need to know. Everyone can paddle!

Where and when do you practice?

Our season is typically March through October. We paddle on Saturday mornings at 7:30am on White Rock Lake at the Dallas United Crew Boathouse on E Lawther drive in Dallas. We are typically on the water until 9:00am and many of us will meet up after for coffee or brunch.

What do I wear/bring to practice?

You should wear comfortable or workout type clothing — preferably something quick drying. (It is a water sport. You may get a little wet). Tennis shoes, water shoes, or hiking sandals are appropriate. Besides that, a little sunscreen and a water bottle is all you need. We will outfit you with a PFD (life vest) and provide a paddle.

Is there a membership fee to join?

We do have an annual membership fee which covers the expenses for facilities, maintenance on the boats, all of our team gear, registration for one local festival, and a team jersey. We make every attempt to keep our fees reasonable each season. We also have a PINK Scholarship program because we hope cost is never a factor in keeping someone from joining us.

Can I “try before I buy”?

Absolutely! We have a complimentary Trial Membership which gives you the opportunity to join us on the water 2 times before you commit.

Do you compete against other teams?

We do participate in several festivals throughout the season against other dragon boat teams. These festivals are completely optional, but so much fun! It is where we have the opportunity to meet our counterparts from across the country and even some international teams. We typically participate in one or two festivals local to DFW, a couple within driving distance, and one long distance. In the past, DUC Pink has raced in Las Colinas, Oklahoma City, Texarkana, Austin, Sugarland, Cleburne, Vancouver, B.C. and Florence, Italy. In January of 2025 we will be racing in Sarasota, Florida and in August 2026 we will be competing in the French Alps on Lake Bourget in Savoie, France.

What’s the difference between paddling and rowing?

Rowers sit on a solitary seat, operate 2 oars, and travel backward.

Paddlers share a bench with a teammate, paddle on one side, and travel forward. PINKS are always moving forward!
